At the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield & Bradford District Branch, age isn’t a barrier to love, thanks to the Elderly Animal Rehoming Scheme (EARS). Many healthy senior cats and dogs (aged 10+) find themselves homeless through no fault of their own, often after their owner falls ill or passes away. EARS was created to make it easier for these older animals to find warm, loving homes and the support they need to thrive in their twilight years.
Under this award-winning initiative, adoption becomes far more accessible. Instead of the standard fee, adopters pay just £15 for a cat and £25 for a dog, with full checks, vaccinations, microchipping and behavioural guidance included.
For a small monthly contribution of £7.50, adopters also receive an EARS ID card and valuable benefits, such as:
- A Booster vaccination and health check once a year
- Routine worming tablets and flea treatment
- Access to our Animal Centre vet during routine clinic times at £7.50 per consultation
- All current and future medication will be offered at a discounted price
- Prescription diets and senior food will be offered at a discounted price
- Euthanasia at RSPCA Animal Centre
- 24 hour emergency phone in case the adopter has a personal emergency
- Emergency cover if an owner is hospitalized i.e. temporary 2 week foster care, dog walking and help with shopping for dog/cat food
- Discount cremation service if required
- Discount grooming
- Transport to our Clinic where necessary
- Grants for emergency treatment/elective surgery dependant on the buoyancy of the Scheme
Importantly, if an adopter can no longer care for their pet, the scheme ensures the animal returns safely to the centre to be rehomed again.

EARS champions the idea that older animals have so much love left to give, and with the right care and support, they make wonderful companions. Whether you’re considering adoption or want to learn more, the friendly team at the Animal Centre is ready to help.
